Getting started

How to Play

  1. 1

    Go to the Play page

Click Play Now from anywhere on the site. If your game data is already loaded from a previous session, you’ll go straight into the game.

  2. 2

    Load your game files

Option A — Direct Play: Hit the Play button and the game loads from the server. Enter your name and email (optional, for updates only) and you’re in.

Option B — Bring Your Own Files: If you prefer, upload your own game.tar.gz file. The archive extracts into your browser’s local storage — this only happens once. You can download the archive from the play page, or create one from your own Vice City install folder.

  3. 3

    Wait for the import

A progress bar shows the extraction: reading → decompressing → extracting files to browser storage. This takes 30 seconds to a couple of minutes depending on your device. Only happens the first time.

  4. 4

    Play

The WASM engine boots and Vice City loads. Full game, full audio, keyboard + mouse controls, gamepad support, saves, cheats — the real thing running natively in your browser tab.

  5. 5

    Come back anytime

Your game data and saves persist in browser storage. Close the tab, come back next week — everything is exactly where you left it. You can also export your data as a .tar.gz to move to another browser or device.

  • • WebAssembly, OPFS, Service Worker, and Web Workers support
  • • ~1.5 GB of browser storage space (for extracted game files)
  • • Best on desktop. Mobile works with touch controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GTA Vice City free to play in the browser?
Playing in the browser is free — there's nothing to install and no subscription. You do need to own a copy of GTA Vice City and supply your own game files, because we don't distribute the copyrighted game data.
Do I need to download anything to play GTA Vice City here?
No installer or app is required. You load your game files once; they're stored locally in your browser (OPFS) and served by a service worker, so the game works offline afterwards without re-downloading.
What do I need to play GTA Vice City online?
Any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16.4+ or Edge — on desktop or mobile, plus your own GTA Vice City game files packaged as game.tar.gz. A keyboard, gamepad, or touchscreen all work.
Will my GTA Vice City save games be kept?
Yes. Saves persist in your browser's IndexedDB between sessions, so you can close the tab and pick up later. You can also export a save to move it to another device.
